The Sketchbook Show

Yesterday I took a trip down to Shoreditch, London, to visit the Graffiti Life Gallery, as they had a show on called 'The Sketchbook Show'. What this consists of is a variety of sketches taken from different graffiti artists sketchbooks, and then pinned up around the gallery for an open viewing. The whole shop was covered in sketches from people such as BRK, Coney, Newso and many more. You could just walk around and see such a vast amount of different styles and methods that artists make to get to their final piece. It gave me a great insight into how an artist can take their idea from their mind and put it down onto paper, and then move it from that paper onto the wall.

Whilst I found all the work there amazing, there was one artist that really stuck out to me from the rest, and this was Mark Ford. He is actually a tattooist instead of a full time graff artist, but his work was outstanding, and after speaking to the people at Graffiti Life about the process he takes to create these sketches I was completely drawn to them. To create the amazing sketches like the ones below he starts of by drawing simple random shapes in one colour, and then adding detail in the same colour to create a character from those simple shapes. But instead of leaving it there, he then starts drawing over the top in another colour, adding more detail to the previous sketch. These elements together create some of the most amazing characters I have seen.

I've also posted a video from the the graffitilife gallery of 'The Sketchbook Show' Which is on from the 2nd August – 4th September, I would highly recommend going, the people hosting the show are cool, they will answer any questions you have to ask, and on top of that the work is awesome. Seriously. Go.
